When TOTM got in touch asking if I’d like to try out their products, I of course said yes because finding organics feminine hygiene products can be difficult, especially in mainstream supermarkets. Each time my period comes around I’m usually rummaging around in my toiletry bag for spare tampons or making a trip to the nearest health food store to pick up some, which isn’t always convenient or fun; when it’s that time of the month.
If you’re not into ‘natural’ ‘organic’ products then you probably haven’t noticed whether the tampons or pads you use are organic or even what they are made out of, however this is something worth looking into because the lining of the vagina is one of the most absorbent parts of the body. It’s estimated that women use between 11,000 and 17,000 tampons during a lifetime, which is a hell of a lot so if like me you’re cautious of using a moon cup, go with organic and that’s a step in the right direction.
Natural VS Conventional, what’s the difference?
Conventional tampons are either made from rayon, a man made fibre which is created from wood pulp or non-organic cotton. Not only does the making of these products involve chopping down a lot of trees but the use of pesticides as well. These activities negatively effect the environment and wildlife, by destroying habitat and allowing the chemicals used as pesticides to poison their water supply. The tampons are then treated with chlorine, to help absorbency and to bleach the product white. This is followed by surfactants that are used for added absorption and some companies even add perfume to make their tampons smell nicer.
Conventional pads are made from synthetic materials. While non-organic pads might not seem as bad as tampons because they are not inserted into the vagina, they still have a negative effect on the environment because they are made from petrochemicals, meaning they are not biodegradable – they can even contain the same amount of plastic as four carrier bags!
Natural tampons and pads by TOTM are made from 100% organic cotton, which means that the cotton is grown without the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. As well as this the products themselves are free from perfume and chorine, making them vagina friendly.
I support any company who are cruelty free, environmentally friendly and have women’s health at heart. However unlike other organic tampon companies (that I know of) TOTM offer a subscription service in a bid to make life simpler. While this service is optional and one off purchases can be made, having them delivered helps to make your period hassle free and means that you’re never caught out. Period.
