Last week I was invited along to the Energy Labb in Shoreditch for the day to try out the Endomondo app. For those that are not familiar with Endomondo, it is a sports and fitness platform that uses GPS to track real-time data such as running, cycling etc. distance and speed. It also allows you to connect with friends and the Endomondo community to help make fitness more inclusive. Now as a complete beginner and someone with a health condition that prevents any strenuous exercise, I have never been pushed outside of my comfort zone. My current exercise regime is long walks on the weekend and waking up to practise morning yoga, so as you imagine I was a little apprehensive with how the Endomondo app could work for me. I have to admit that the thought of spending the day ‘working out’ was a little daunting and I was nervous, however this soon changed upon meeting the lovely people at the Energy Labb.
After chatting to the team my about my experience (or lack of experience) with exercise over freshly pressed juice and energy bites (recipe below) I had the pleasure of having a 1-1 session with Barbara Brunner, who showed me the ropes on the equipment they have there at the studio (rowing, cycling and running machine). She explained to me that although I am unable to carry out any strenuous activity, it did not mean that I was unable to push myself in other ways and sweat a little within a safe boundary. Throughout my workout I wore a heart rate monitor which connected to the Endomondo app, where Barbara was able to ensure that I was not over doing it and my heart rate stayed within a safe range.
I have to say I felt pretty damn good after my first ‘proper’ workout and wondered why I had not started working out sooner. I guess it is a combination of things but having someone beside me gave me the confidence I never knew I had with exercise, I was on such a high I even managed to join in on the 4k jog. Ok sure the jog was slow placed and it took us 40 minutes to complete which to those more experienced may not seem like such an achievement but I was proud because upon waking that morning I never would have thought that I would be capable of this. Thanks to Endomondo and the team, I left feeling empowered and full of good advice to continue on my fitness journey… It just goes to show that we are all capable of more than we think!
Head on over to Endomondo where you can download the app for free and explore all that is has to offer. Some features of the app do require payment however if you are a beginner like myself the free version will be more than enough to keep you heading in the right direction 😉

Energising Endomondo Spirulina Super Bites by Barbara Brunner
These spirulina energy bites are delicious, you honesty cannot taste the pond like powder and they are infact rather nutty and moreish. I even made a batch this weekend to munch on through out the week. They are packed full of protein, iron, B vitamins and omega 3 fats that are perfect for boosting energy levels whilst on the go.
To make 10 bites you will need:
1 cup milled seed mix
10 pitted dates (I like to use Medjool dates)
1/3 cup almond butter
1-2 tsp spirulina powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
A pinch of Himalayan salt
- Pulse the dates and milled seed mix in a food processor
- Add in the rest of the ingredients and pulse again until it has the consistency of a sticky batter
- Scoop about 1 tsp of mixture and roll into a ball
- Store in the refrigerator for 2-3 days or keep them in the freezer
